FAQ’S

What type of flagpoles do you provide to go into the ground?

At FlagPoles Ireland we only Supply and Install Fiberglass or Glassfiber flagpoles nationwide throughout Ireland, These type of flagpoles are the most durable on the market and are easily maintained unlike aluminum or metal poles that can often cause health and safety concerns and are also costly to service. Fiberglass flag poles are very light and can in many cases, they can be serviced by the customer.

Is there any safety concerns I should consider when choosing flagpoles?

Yes, it is essential that when choosing your required type of flagpole you consider where it is to be located and also who will be using and around it, for example in a school environment often the students are encouraged to raise the National Irish Flag at the start of the day after dawn and another will lower it when school is finished before dusk. As this is a school environment it is essential that the flagpoles have a Internal halyard roping system, this would fall under the same criteria as cords on blinds in a classroom guideline.

Where can flagpoles be installed

We can install our range of both classic sleeved and hinged base fiberglass flagpoles anywhere, 90% of installations are carried out in a soft margin such as in grass, a flowerbed, stone yard and many other similar types of ground conditions. The only exception to this is an existing concrete slab or foundation. We can install into this but we would use a different method of fixing compared to going into a soft margin and may require an additional flat flange metal base. The position of flagpoles when being installed should be free from overhanging trees, power lines and underground services.

Are there different types of uses for flagpoles?

At Flag Poles Ireland we offer a classic sleeved fiberglass flagpole and also a premium hinged base fiberglass flagpoles. The following are the typical uses.

  • Classic Sleeved

These flagpoles are most commonly used for flying the national flags, county flags and custom logo branded flags in the same format which is usually 90x180cm in size. They can also accommodate a banner style flag that can be either roped up and down or used on a rotating banner arms system.

  • Premium Hinged Base Flagpoles

These types of flagpoles can also be used in the same manner as the classic sleeved as outlined above, however they are more commonly used in the likes of motor dealerships where banner style flags are used on a rotating banner arm at the top of the pole. These flags are mostly put on and taken off when the pole is lying flat on the ground making the raising and lowering of the flags on poles safe with a controlled pivot up and down.

What size Flagpoles do I need?

Flagpoles can be got in any size but we start our vertical pole range in 6meters tall or 18-19ft approx., this is classified as standard height in a flagpole, the main reason behind this is because when a flag is not flying it will be hanging down the pole, you don’t want the bottom of the flag at a level where it can be reached from the ground as it will be possibly vandalised especially if it is a flag of political concern. If flying the national flag alongside a second flag the national flag should be on a taller pole to comply with etiquette. Flagpoles should be positioned no less than 2 meters apart to avoid the flags touching the poles alongside each other.

Do I need Planning Permission?

We cannot confirm weather planning permission is required or not as every local council is different, however from dealing with many customers with the same concern it is our opinion that planning for flying the national flag is not required unless it is in close proximity to neighbors where the sound of the flag flapping may cause distress, If you are a business flying branded flags then most definitely yes you will require planning permission as this is branding. It is important to note that all our poles being sleeved or hinged are classified as a temporary structure unlike a lamppost that cant be removed so it is worth advising your planning agent of this as sometimes there are guidelines for these conditions.
It is always best to apply for planning permission to avoid any upset.

How many flags can be hung from a flagpole?

Flagpoles are designed to hang 1 flag per pole only, it is very common for people to get larger taller poles to daisy chain flags together bit this will cause stress on the pole and it will break voiding the warranty. The manufacturer will be able to identify the cause of the break style on the pole from the pattern of the glass fibers.

Internal Halyard or External Halyard?

We always recommend internal halyard roping systems predominantly for health and safety to all customers, but this is not essential in many cases, for residential flagpoles or poles installed maybe into a business park where there are no children around or the premises are locked up at night an external halyard roping system will work just fine. Internal halyard roping systems are also known as Anti-vandal too as they will also prevent theft of the flags or ropes getting cut.
internal halyard roping systems will use a counterweight that is either fitted to the bottom of the flag or end of the rope. This can bang off the pole causing a noise, The external halyard roping systems will have the rope running up and down the outside of the pole, these ropes will also bang against the pole causing a noise too. With use both options can be avoided.

What about wind alerts?

When there is a wind alert from your local met office it is essential that all flags must be removed from the poles. Failure to do so may result in the poles breaking the warranty being void. This is highlighted in the links you would have received along with your invoice. This si also advised in all correspondence from us in sales under our signature.

How long will a flagpole last?

All our flagpoles come with a 10-year manufacturers warranty for the pole only, our range of fiberglass flagpoles are very durable and some of the initially poles we installed nearly 30 years ago are still in use as they have been serviced yearly. We can extend the warranty to poles for an additional 5 years as art of our annual maintenance program.
